Just like the name suggest, this historical monument is an entry gate into India. It is undoubtedly the most famous and visited tourist place in the country. This huge monument is situated on a popular harbor in South Mumbai. This place offers a magnificent view of the water front of the ocean. The architecture of Gateway Of India is symbol of the end of the colonial rule in this country. Built by Gammon India Limited, established by J C Gammon in the early 20th century to mark the visit of King George V and Queen Mary, it is a 26 m high rise building that greets everybody who steps in the city as a salute to our freedom and democracy and our win over the rulers. The pattern of style of construction is largely influenced by the Indo-Saracenic and Muslim architectural design of 16th century.
The first major event that took place here was the passing of the First Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry on 28th February 1948 on the departure of the last troops of the British from the Indian soil after independence. Ever since then, Gateway of India has turned into a major tourist spot that attracts uncountable number of visitors to travel to Mumbai city. Here you can enjoy a ride on a cruise through Mumbai’s natural harbor or just simply take the pleasure of roaming and walking beside the line of Taj Mahal hotel and the ocean for a wonderful experience that will surely fill your trip with loads of enriching and lifetime memories.
