Ajanta and Ellora Caves, Mumbai

Ajanta and Ellora caves are located in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. It comprises of rock-cut cave mountains. These ancient standings are the finest living examples of Indian rock – cut architecture that were built between 2nd and 4th century. There are in total of thirty caves including prayer halls and monasteries. These prayer halls are called as Chaitya and monasteries are famous by a more popular name like Vihara.
The designs of Ajanta caves are categorized into two phases of architecture: Hinayana phase and Mahayana phase. The carvings represent highlights of people ranging from kings to slaves, women, men and children.
The other half of this tourist place is dedicated to Buddhism. This part is called as Ellora caves which has 35 cave structures consisting of numerous Buddhist monasteries, Hindu and Jain temples. Ellora caves came into existence after Ajanta caves between 5th and 10th century. In total it has seventeen Hindu and five Jain caves.
In short, Ajanta and Ellora caves are a fascinating piece of history full of magnificent structural wealth that has enabled it to become a highly visited tourist spot in Maharashtra today frequented by the tourist community.
