Elephanta Caves is an acclaimed World Heritage Site. This historical location set 10 kms off the eastern coast of Mumbai covering vast land of area of 60,000 sq ft. it is famous for exquisite architectural designs in its rock-cut temples. The carved walls and shrines of Elephanta Caves tells story of Indian mythology through portrayal of pictures on its sculptures present in the courtyards and shrines. It is a highly visited tourist spot especially in the month of February every year due to the much awaited Elephanta Festival.
This heritage site is believed to come into existence during the 9th to 13th century, in the ruling period of Silhara kings. . There are seven caves in total and the significant amongst them is the Mahesha-Murti Cave. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in its three roles as the Creator, the Preserver, and the Destroyer of the universe. A visit to this place is the best opportunity to get an insight into the religious and cultural aspects of India.
